Career in Sports

As a young athlete, Wightman won the European Junior 1500-meter title in 2013. In June 2018, Wightman broke the Scottish record for 1000 meters with a time of 2:16.27 at a Diamond League event in Stockholm. The previous record had stood since 1984. Wightman broke the Scottish record for 1500 meters with a time of 3:29.47 at the 2020 Diamond League in Monaco. Wightman won the 1500-meter race at the 2022 World Athletics Championships with a time stat of 3:29.23, which was his personal best. He beat Olympic champion and European record holder Jakob Ingebrigtsen to take the gold medal. His father, Geoff Wightman, who used to run marathons and has been a sports commentator for a long time, called the race as in-stadium commentator.

Personal Life

Wightman was born on July 11, 1994, in the English city of Nottingham. Before going to Loughborough University, he went to two private schools in Edinburgh: Stewart’s Melville College and Fettes College. Geoff Wightman, his father and trainer, ran the marathon for England at the Commonwealth Games in 1990. In addition, his mother, Susan Tooby, and his aunt ran for Great Britain at the Olympic Games.
